Houston Texas is the fourth largest city in the United States. Nearly six million people call the greater Houston area, home. In 2009, the city won for having the healthiest housing markets in the state of Texas. The cost of living is affordable here, making the economy stable.

Annise Parker, a Democrat is currently the mayor of Houston. In this area a major has a big job. They are required to manage the city making sure all laws and ordinances are followed through, as well as being chief administrator, official representative and executive officer. The city is equally divided Republican and Democrat. Wealthier citizens tend to vote Republican and middle to lower class tends to vote Democrat.

Houston has a vast energy industry, primarily gas and oil. The Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network has named Houston as a budding financial base for their use of wind and solar as renewable energy sources. Though the gas prices are high in the area, many of the citizens are employed through the energy industry. Houston has done a lot of things right to help with the stabilized economy and exploration into other forms of energy. This city should be globally recognized as a leader in to other cities in a struggling economy.

The political atmosphere in Houston is somewhat unique, both to the country and the state. For one thing, it is the largest city in the country without zoning laws, and it is also one of the fastest growing major cities in the nation. Houston is very politically divided compared to the rest of the state. The power balance sways often between Republicans and Democrats in a microcosm of what is going on in the country at large.Additional information can be found at http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/09/19/rick-perry-s-lesson-for-2012-from-new-york-election-for-weiner-seat.html. Voting is predictably split between economic, cultural, educational, residential and racial factors. Much of the inner city is Democrat, while affluent outlying areas are Republican.

The GOP in Harris County, of which Houston is the county seat, are currently the main force trying to get Rick Perry elected as the Republican nominee for president. It is important to understand Perry’s politics as they may effect a global stage. In a divided city, Perry’s politics have come under scrutiny. His concept that it is the millionaires who create jobs and businesses seems to be an outdated one in today’s economy. His policies would seem to be instrumental in eliminating the middle class, which is already in extreme decline as the gap between rich and poor widens.

When you look at the facts, it’s no wonder why Houston is home to so many headquarters for Fortune 500 companies. In fact, Houston ranks only behind New York City in terms of Fortune 500 companies which are headquartered in the city. This include everything from pharmaceutical companies, to airlines, computer companies and defense companies. Companies love Houston not just for the climate and the people, but also for the low cost of doing business in the state. With tax breaks and other incentives, more and more companies are flocking to the greater Houston area then to any other city in the United States.

Another big reason that companies love to headquarter in the Houston area is the quality of people who live in the area. When you are looking for employees to fill up your corporate offices, you can’t do much better then the Houston area, with a 2.7 million person workforce, 30 of which have a college or graduates degrees. In addition, the Houston metropolitan area has been growing at a rate nearly double that of the national average. Add in the fact that 2.6 million sq. ft. of prime office space being constructed and Houston seems like the right place for a company.
