Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, is commonly referred to as the energy capital of the world. Five of the six major energy companies maintain major operations here. Houston also has a ship channel which elevates its status on the world stage to the classification of world city. Trade makes up nearly a fourth of the Houston economy. Mining, engineering, health services and manufacturing are Houston’s economic interests. Houston’s GDP hovers around four hundred billion, larger than all but a small group of countries worldwide.

Pennzoil is located at Pennzoil Place, an architecturally groundbreaking building constructed in 1975. In manufacturing, Plains All American Pipeline, Cooper Industries, and the top manufacturer in the United States, according to Forbes: Thrustmaster of Texas, are included.
Politically Houston is democratic in urban areas and republican in suburban areas, particularly in master communities such as River Oaks and Kingwood in northeast Houston. In 2010 Houston became the first U.S. city with over a million residents to have an openly gay mayor, Annise Parker. Only inner city residents vote for mayor in Houston, which accounts in part for a democratic leaning of the vote. The last five mayors have been from the Democratic Party.
